Portsmouth RI History Center Groundbreaking Set for Nov 1

The “Ground Breaking” of THE PORTSMOUTH HISTORY CENTER of Portsmouth RI is set for Saturday Nov 1st, 2014 at 10 AM.  Although there will not be any shovels in the ground, the initial set-up of the history center including the unveiling of the library area dedicated to the project and the new digitization archiving web site with associated dedicated PC and equipment for viewing the web site and video conferencing, will be shown to the public.

  1. I look forward to welcoming everyone to this facility at the library. While still a work in progress, we will be showing the technology and physical space in our Public library dedicated to our own unique history that was an early objective of our fund-raising activities last year, as expressed in our letter to sponsors of our our 375th anniversary celebration, as indicated below:

“The Portsmouth RI 375th Steering Committee’s fundraising goals are to raise funds needed to plan, publicize and conduct 375th celebratory events during 2013, and when the year is over, to provide the town with a lasting tribute to Portsmouth’s history. To accomplish this, all funds remaining at the end of the year will be used to establish a space in the Portsmouth Free Public Library dedicated to the storage, maintenance and public use of historical documents, photographs, and artifacts relating to Portsmouth’s history and to create a digital archive of such materials. Portsmouth Free Public Library’s accessibility and its Portsmouth History collection will enable Portsmouth citizens and visitors to conduct research in an environment that is conducive to scholarly pursuits. The collection will be cataloged and easily searchable and would be an appropriate repository of Portsmouth’s historical legacy for decades to come.”
